"Battle for a Cause" is a campaign driven by the UWSP Women's Soccer team which benefits Operation Homefront Wisconsin. The University Store and Text Rental is proud to be a drop off location for items such as toiletries, books and food (nothing that will melt, please!). The items will be sent to Wisconsin troops who are serving overseas. Remember items can be for both men AND women.

University Store Positions

Account Analyst:
The Account Analyst is responsible for assisting in the financial operations of the US/TR. The Account Analyst authorizes payment of invoices applying appropriate credits and compiles a monthly financial report.

Human Resources Coordinator:
The Human Resource Coordinator is responsible for student payroll, assisting in the general applications of US/TR student employment program and work rules, assisting in the hiring of student employees, and publishing a weekly newsletter. The HRC may be asked to fill schedule gaps for other positions, requiring a general knowledge of the University Store/Text Rental operations, and knowledge and application of sound customer service principles.

Supplemental Book Department Head:
The Supplemental Book Department Head is responsible for assisting with ordering books and course materials, and preparing books and course materials for sale. They are responsible for creating promotions, researching and suggesting new product lines, and increasing sales through his/her efforts. They are required to understand the book modules of the point of sale system in building records, checking inventory, pricing, labeling, and processing returns. They are also responsible for researching and processing special book orders.

Merchandise Buyer Department Head:
The Merchandise Buyer Department Head is responsible for assisting with ordering merchandise, stocking, displaying merchandise, maintain online store, creating promotions and increasing sales through his/her efforts.

Graphic Designer:
The Graphic Designer is responsible for developing and maintaining awareness of the University Store/Text Rental through web and graphic design projects. Writing, graphic and verbal communication skills are needed, as well as general knowledge of marketing and promotional principles. Responsibilities include promotions through different media means to students, faculty, staff, and community.

Featured Book Recommendation: The Hunger Games

One of the University Store's most recent featured books was The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The University Store's own Meredith Hanson recommends and reviewed the book:

"The Hunger Games is a science fiction book about a girl that is forced to participate in the annual Hunger Games, the only rule: stay alive. Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister's place when her name is called at the reaping. Katniss must try to outsmart the gamemakers and the contestants from the other 11 districts.

I will not ruin the whole book, but I strongly recommend The Hunger Games to anyone who enjoys a suspenseful, thought-provoking love story. Once you finish this book you will run out and buy the other books in the series...that is what I did."

Canned Food Drive Sale Results

Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before-and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Get Caught Reading is a nationwide public service campaign launched by the Association of American Publishers. The event is promoting how fun reading is to people of all ages. Even though May is the official Get Caught Reading month, the celebration lasts throughout the year.

Caps & Gowns Dates & Hours of distribution:
Caps, gowns, tassels and honor cords are available for purchase at the University Store in the Dreyfus University Center from May 3-7. They will be distributed at the back of the University Store.

Hours of distribution are: Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

If you are out of the Stevens Point area and are unable to come pick up your cap and gown during the hours of distribution, you may mail order your cap and gown package to be shipped to you from May 3-7. Please call the University Store, 715-346-3431 between 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. for more information.

Did you know the color originally associated with St. Patty’s Day was blue? Not green? Over the years the color green and its association with St. Patty’s Day grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration for St. Patty’s Day as early as the 17th century.

Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

Why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is March 17th is the day St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass.

In American cities with large Irish populations, St. Patrick's Day is a very big deal. Many cities celebrate with parades, wearing “green”, music and songs, and Irish food and drink. Some communities go as far as to dye their rivers and streets green!

We survived Rush week!

A HUGE thank you goes out to all of the full time and student staff at the University Store! Not only did we work our regular scheduled hours but many students volunteered and worked extra hours! At times the lines were extremely long, everyone waited patiently. In return our cashiers greeted every customer with a smile and excellent customer service. Rush week ran smoothly, considering we didn’t have a power outage or a flooded water fountain like semesters past. I would have to say this semester is off to a great start!

Text Rental alone had just over 4,000 students come through to rent their text books! On top of that students were coming through to buy supplemental books, school supplies, and apparel items. Let’s just say we were at our full capacity for majority of the week. Keeping a store looking nice takes a lot of work. But, to keep a store looking its best while the entire student body is coming through takes much more than a lot of work. Our floor associates are constantly restocking shelves to keep art and school supplies stocked. Erin our merchandise buyer is reordering supplies daily as to keep up with the demands of supplies. Pat and our Shipping and Receiving Clerks are hard at work checking in orders, and pricing them to be put on the shelves. This is just a tiny glimpse as to how much work goes into keeping our store stocked and looking tidy.

Welcome back Pointers!

With the hustle and bustle of the semester starting in a few days. We are going to be getting back into the swing of things and falling back into the familiar routine of class, studying, exams, and fitting sleep somewhere in there. To brighten your day and take a step back from all the craziness, make sure to stop into the University Store to check out our new apparel items, art/school supplies, and imprinted/non imprinted gift items. Everyone at the University Store & Text Rental has been hard at work getting the store ready for "RUSH" week and the start of new semester. As of 1/22/10 we've had about 1,800 students come through and rent their text books! New Addition...Wheres your SP been?

This is Logan Degenhardt posing with his 9 point buck. Look at the size of those antlers! This poor little guy (I am referring to the buck) was shot with a gun on Sunday, November 22 at 7:20 am. He was shot in Grant county on private land. The most interesting part of Logans buck story is the buck was shot only 75 yards from his vehicle went down in one shot, definently a case of "right place, right time". Logan even remembered to wear his UWSP apparel! Congrats on a successful hunting season Logan!

The End of the Semester...

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Being a college student, we all forget what home cooked food tastes like. Nothing beats a Thanksgiving feast of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and you can't forget the pumpkin pie! To sum it up, I think we can all agree it is a food coma waiting to happen. The one thing I hear from students and faculty is Thanksgiving break was not long enough. I have to agree, but on a happy note the semester is over in less then three weeks and then it is Christmas AND winter break!

Everyone is frantically trying to finish semester projects, that they didn't start until now, or finish 10+ page papers and are up until the wee hours in the morning. Students tell themselves, "Never again, next semester I will not procrastinate..." We all know how long that lasts. On a side note, if you need any study materials whether it be note cards or a candy bar....The University Store has you covered. You would be surprised how many students make daily trips to the store during the last few weeks of the semester. Actually...if you are one of the students that procrastinates you wouldn't think anything of it.

When You are Engulfed in Flames

On Monday, October 19th David Sedaris graced UWSP with his presence for a book signing and lecture. He is the author of Holidays on Ice, and Barrel Fever. As well as personal essays Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and his latest When You Are Engulfed in Flames. Sedaris’s books have been translated into 25 different languages, and his pieces appear regularly in the New Yorker. Sedaris has won several awards for his work. He was nominated for Grammy Awards in the categories of Best Comedy Album for David Sedaris: Live at Carnegie Hall. In 2001 he was nominated as Humorist of the Year in Time Magazine.

Amanda Samson and I sold Sedaris’s novels throughout the book signing and lecture. The one thing that stuck out to me aside from Sedaris’s hilarious nature was his bluntness. He goes where no man dares to go. Asking one guy, when was the last time you saw your mother naked? Who in their right mind wants to see their mom naked? Sedaris has no shame and is not afraid to test the water. The sincere joy that shined from one ear to the other while talking to his fans was apparent when he gave his undivided attention to each individual. Amanda and I didn’t get to sit in and listen to the lecture. However we could sense that everyone was enjoying themselves. Laughter rang through the doors every five to ten minutes and continued throughout the night.

I like to people watch (I swear I am not a creeper). Majority of his fans stood in line for an eternity, ok it wasn’t an eternity but it was 30-40 minutes. According to my sense of time, that is an eternity. Still, everyone had a smile plastered on their faces. After the last obsessed Sedaris fan left he happily signed numerous copies for the bookstore. He chatted Amanda’s ear off about bunnies and how his sister had a bunny. He didn’t care that it was after eleven at night and had to jet across the country, he gave Amanda the same undivided attention every other person got. Oh and on the end note, Sedaris likes to give prizes out during his lectures. The last thing on a 14 year old boys mind is getting a condom while sitting next to his dad in front of 100 other people. Let your imagination run wild and I am sure even your craziest thoughts, won’t seem so out of the ordinary to David Sedaris.

Welcome back to school! We are excited to have everyone back on campus and in the University Store and Text Rental. As of 8/31/09 we have had 5170 students go thru and rent their textbooks - that's about 57%!

Opening weekend fun

It seems as though we are a little cursed. Last spring, during rush, we had a major power outage. This year a flood. Thankfully it was only a mini-flood, and only in the back room. Check out the video! I believe Erin is talking about the vengeance of the rush gods.

Summer Fun

Summer's started off fun so far. Graphic Designer Jill Roberts started working on a new theme for US/TR. I'll call it the "I am..." theme. We'll be creating banners and postcards with this theme this year. It should be a fun theme this year.

Here are a couple of my favorite pictures from the last photo shoot. Kaylei (TR Clerk) is taking the photo shoot very seriously in this picture, and Jill Raikowski (Floor Assoc) looks like she is having a blast. Looks like it was a lot of fun. Jill is gone from the summer now, so we'll have to wait until August to see what other photos she brings us for the year.

US/TR staff celebrates Spring, and our departing employees

Friday, May 8th around 4:30pm saw sunny skies turn to cloudy. Was it because the University Store and Text Rental staff was having an unholy gathering with food and water balloons? Likely not.

We had a good group gathered this year for our end of the year picnic, and celebration of our departing employees. Leaving us to graduation, internships or transfers are Lisa Butz, Jeff Dahl, Meghan DeLeeuw, Shawna Espich, Liz Howard, Aaron LaPacz, Aaron Leist, Rachel Reinke, and Jon Whitcomb. We are sad to see them all leaving us, but happy for them that their futures are ahead of them.

The Spring party was also the culmination of the US/TR Penny Wars. We raised a total of $183.50 for the Portage County Humane Society (charity of the Aaron, Jolene, Erin, Stephanie team). The team that got pelted with water balloons was the Jeff, LaRon, Nichole team. Let's just say, the structured firing line of water balloons against victims quickly turned to all out war with LaRon and Jeff catching and throwing balloons back at their would be attackers. And Jon chasing Nichole through the park with a balloon only to fall on his rump.

All in all, fun for all.

Our buyback list is created from all of the book orders we received from faculty by our order deadlines. Unfortunately if your instructor hasn't turned in a book order we can't give your the highest dollar value for your book. However there is a used book wholesaler performing the buy for the University Store, and if the book is not on our list, they will offer you their best wholesale price for the book (between 0-33% of current new book price).

The National Association of College Stores (NACS) requested pictures for the new "General Merchandise" module that they are in the process of re-writing. Ever obliging I started taking pictures. Here are three of my faves. The first two, just because I think they look cool, the last one - well, look at it, it's funny.

I was looking for a picture of "hand-selling" or "customer service in action" and Derek and Anna offered themselves up to be the sacrificial lambs, figuratively. I wanted to submit this picture, because I think it looks the least staged, but Anna didn't like it, so I didn't. Instead, I posted it here. I think it's a fabulous picture.

The spring 2009 semester is coming to an end in just over two weeks, and that means it's graduation season! The University Store will start distributing caps and gowns on May 4th, be sure to pick yours up before May 8th! Thank you to everyone who contributed pictures to our "Where's your 'SP been?" contest. All of the pictures were wonderful! However, we did have to pick winners.

The best overall picture award goes to Holly Novasic, '11. The picture is artistically portrayed, shows the UWSP imprint, and Holly is participating in a service project in this picture.

The prettiest picture award goes to Kristina Lemanski, '10, for her picture taken on Byron Bay Australia in 2007.

The funniest picture goes to David Nevins, '88, for his astonishment that he landed at UWP, not UWSP.

Congratulations! And remember, the pictures will also be posted at the University Store and during the 50th anniversary party on Saturday, March 28th at 6:00pm.

David Nevins, '88, and his 'SP have traveled to a lot of places; Dickeyville's World Famous Grotto, the worlds biggest "M", but he can't believe he's landed at UW-Platteville! He's worn this same sweatshirt to all the UWP vs UWSP basketball games this year, and claims to have only gotten beaten up twice!
